3. How does refrigerant dryer work?

Refrigeration dryer mainly for laser cutter. Use the principle of refrigeration to reduce the temperature of compressed air. Supersaturate water vapor at low temperature. Then they will condenses into liquid water droplets.

Afterwards, these water will be separated from air. Finally get out of the refrigerant air dryer. Thereby we get the dry compressed air. The refrigerated dryer has 4 high-precision filters. To ensure the water, dust and oil removal effect of dryer machine.

Turn on the power to the refrigerant dryer. Compressed air enters the machine. Firstly, pass through a dust filter. Filter out solid impurities in compressed air. Then go to the pre-filter. Get out most liquid water and oil.

Afterwards, enter the 3-in-1 plate heat exchanger. Use physical principle to cool down and condense. Change the gaseous water to liquid. And get them out through the air-water separation unit. Then discharge through the automatic drain.

So we get the dried compressed air. Then enter the heat recovery part of refrigerated dryer. It can bring the air temperature back up. That is, it’s close to ambient temperature. So it can prevent the difference between the two temperatures. At the same time, it can avoid the secondary condensation.

Immediately after, they will enter the first stage oil-removal filter. It can filter residual oil mist and water mist. Then enter the second stage oil-removal filter. Thoroughly filter out oil mist. Finally output the pure compressed air. So they are ready for the use by laser cutters.


4. What’s the main functions of refrigeration dryer parts? (1) 3 in 1 plate exchanger of refrigerated dryer

This is one of most important spare parts in refrigerant dryer. It consists of the air heat exchange system of the dryer. It contains 3 parts. The function is the same as that of the traditional air dryer. The three components are as follows. That is, air heat exchanger, refrigerant evaporator and separator.

Firstly, the heat exchanger can cool down air temperature initially. So it can reduce the load of our refrigerant compressor. Moreover, it has another important role. That is, the cold dry air will come back to here. And it can heat the temperature up. Thus, it can avoid the water droplets on the outlet. At the same time, it will not pollute our laser lenses.

Secondly, the refrigerant evaporator will cool the air deeply. It is the core component in the refrigeration dryer system. At here, the water vapor becomes into liquid water. So it can reach the desired pressure dew point.

Thirdly, we need the cyclone separator. It separates the clean compressed air from water. Besides, it is with the electric drain valve. So it can get the water out of refrigerated dryer. If there was no separator, it would not achieve the purpose of water removal.


(2) Refrigerant compressor

The compressor determines the cooling efficiency of the refrigeration dryer. In addition, it also affects the stability of the performance of refrigerant dryer. It is the largest part of the cost of air compressor dryer. Below we use an example to illustrate the role of the compressor. The compressor quality has a great influence on the dew point and energy consumption of the refrigeration dryer.

In 2013, China’s Hefei Machinery Research Institute conducted an experiment on this. The operating condition standard of the test involves 4 parameters. That is, flow rate, intake air temperature, pressure, and ambient temperature. The specific working parameters are as follows:

Air capacity is 6m³/min. Inlet air temperature is 38℃. In addition, the air pressure is 0.7MPa. And the ambient temperature is 38℃。

Firstly, use two kinds of refrigerant compressors, good and bad. Install them inside the refrigerated dryer 1 and dryer 2 respectively. Afterwards, the researchers adjusted the air flow three times. And record the pressure dew point changes of the two refrigerant dryers. Finally got a conclusion.


① Conclusion 1:

Capacity of refrigerant dryer 1 > that of refrigerant 2
Energy efficiency ratio of refrigeration dryer 1 > that refrigeration dryer 2
Under the same dew point, the refrigerated dryer with higher energy efficiency ratio saves more electricity.

Subsequently, the technicians made adjustments. Record the electrical power changes of the two refrigerated dryers. And draw conclusions.


② Conclusion 2:

If reduce a lot of air flow, the power is only down 14.2%. Therefore, the compressor is not the bigger the better. Excessive refrigerant compressor will cause energy waste. So it very important for refrigerant dryer manufacturer to select the compressors.

Finally, the technician adjusted the inlet air temperature 4 times. Also record the pressure dew point changes of the two refrigerated dryers. And get conclusion.


③ Conclusion 3

Sometimes, the refrigeration compressor does not work well. Even if the heat exchange system is 100% effective, the dew point temperature will be higher than 10°C.

To sum up: excellent compressors are more expensive than ordinary compressors. But it will bring long-term benefits to customers.


(3) Hot gas bypass valve of refrigeration dryer

For some reason, there is only a partial load on the refrigerated dryer. The refrigeration circuit may be overcooling the air. This will cause the moisture in the air to not only condense, but freeze. If water freezes inside the heat exchanger, it will block the air flow. Besides, the expansion of the ice can crack the heat exchanger.

The valve can automatically adjust the dryer cooling temperature. When refrigerant dryer is only partially loaded, the system pressure is lower. As the pressure in evaporator decreases, this valve opens. Allow some refrigerant to bypass the heat exchanger. So it can avoid overcooling problem.


(4) Filter drier

The common fault of the refrigerated dryer is dirty and blockage. This will result in insufficient liquid supply to the evaporator. Also lead to frost and condensation. This is largely due to a faulty filter drier.

The filter drier has two roles. One is filter the impurities in refrigerant. Due to corrosion, there are some impurities in refrigeration system. They will follow the circulation of the refrigerant. Finally, it will affect the cooling effect of refrigerant dryer.

Another role is drying. That is, it can absorb the moisture in the refrigerant. Thereby preventing the occurrence of “ice block” phenomenon. The filter drier is generally installed before the throttle device.


5. Why we need the refrigerated dryer for laser cutting?

The air source for laser cutting is compressed air. But there are water and oil vapor. So they will be sprayed on the surface of the laser protection mirror. This can seriously affect the laser beam. Finally, it will affect the cutting quality. Therefore, it is necessary to purify the compressed air.

This refrigerated dryer has a 4-stage precision filters. Pressure dew point is 2~8 ℃. The oil content does not exceed 0.001ppM. The particle filtration precision is 0.01μm. So it can effectively remove moisture, oil, dust and other impurities.

In addition, it also needs to develop good operating habits. This protects the compressor and refrigeration dryer life. Some people start air compressor first and then start the refrigerant dryer. It may not reach the desired pressure dew point for long time. Then there will be still moisture in the compressed air. At this time, operate the laser cutting machine. The protective lens will fog up.

On the contrary, the correct operating habits should be like this. Start the refrigerated dryer firstly. Wait for the refrigerant temperature to drop to about 5℃. Then start the air compressor.


6. How to use the refrigeration dryer? (1) Safe operation procedures of refrigerant dryer

① Firstly, the working pressure of refrigerated dryer is limited. Pls don’t exceed the Max pressure on the nameplate;

② Secondly, don’t use protective device together with other equipment. The voltage fluctuation range shall not exceed 10% of the rated value;

③ Thirdly, the installation meets the requirements of the national electric power standard. The housing should be grounded reliably.

④ In addition, check whether the inlet air temperature and pressure are normal. Whether the refrigerant is leaking;

⑤ When the system is working, let the refrigeration dryer run first. Drain condensate. Then turn on air compressor in a few minutes. Afterwards, slowly open the intake valve;

⑥ Run for 30 minutes. Then check whether the drainage system is normal;

⑦ Maintenance must be carried out by professionals. And cut off power before repairing. Air lines and systems must be depressurized.

⑧ Should avoid the refrigerated dryer running without load for a long time.

⑨ Don’t continuously start and stop the refrigerant dryer for a short time. There should be at least 10 minutes between each startup. Otherwise, it will damage the refrigeration compressor.


(2) Start the refrigeration dryer

① Firstly, input 220V AC power to the refrigerated dryer. At this time, the “POWER” red indicator light is on.

② Afterwards, turn the red knob clockwise. That is, from “OFF” to “ON”. At this time, the knob will pop open and turn on the work. The “RUNNING” green work indicator of refrigeration dryer is on.

③ The pressure gauge and temperature gauge will indicate the corresponding values;

Observe the refrigerant dryer for 5-10 minutes. After air treatment, refrigerated dryer can reach 2-10 ℃ dew point. At this time, the refrigerant high and low pressure gauges are in the normal range as follows:

For R410A refrigerant:
Low pressure range: 0.6~0.8MPa and high pressure range: 1.8~2.3MPa;

For R407c refrigerant:
Low pressure range: 0.3~0.5MPa, and high pressure rane is 1.2~1.8MPa.

For R134A refrigerant:
Normal low pressure range: 0.1~0.3MPa, and high pressure range: 0.8~1.1MPa;

④ For continuous use, should discharge accumulated water in the filter regularly;


(3) Turn off the refrigerated dryer

① In case of accident or shutdown, please press the red knob.
② After emptying, turn off the power. And drain condensate.


7. Refrigerated dryer troubleshooting (1) Refrigerant dryer not running

Possible reasons are as follows:

① The refrigerant compressor circuit is disconnected;
② The fuse is blown;
③ Action of the thermal relay of refrigeration dryer;
④ Various protective controls of the refrigerated dryer;
⑤ The air pressure protection switch is disconnected;


The corresponding solutions are below:

① Turn off the power, and then check the wiring;
② Replace the fuse;
③ Turn off the power. Find the cause of the overload after waiting 15 minutes.
④ Repair or replace;
⑤ Firstly, check the air pressure. Then adjust the protection switch. Repair or replace if defective;


(2) After the refrigeration dryer starts, it stops immediately after short time

Below are the possible reasons:

① The refrigerant compressor is overloaded;
② Refrigerated dryer lacks refrigerant;
③ The low pressure is too low.
④ The expansion valve blocking;


The solutions are as follows:

① Check whether the exhaust pressure is too high. Or whether the ambient temperature is too high. Or whether the intake air capacity is too large. Then repair according to the corresponding reasons. Or replace parts or refrigerant dryer;
② Repair leaks. Then refill the refrigerant;
③ Check the hot gas bypass valve. Then make adjustments.
④ Repair or replace the expansion valve;


(3) Refrigerant dryer exhaust pressure is too high

The reasons are as follows:

① Refrigerant of the refrigerated dryer is too much;
② There is air in the refrigeration system;
③ The condenser of the refrigeration dryer is dirty;
④ Ambient temperature is too high;
⑤ The condensing pressure switch is faulty;
⑥ The fan motor is faulty;
⑦ Rotation direction of cooling fan is incorrect;
⑧ The cooling water flow control valve is faulty (this is mainly for the water-cooled refrigerant dryer);


How to solve these dryer problems:

① Exhaust a part of the refrigerant. Or refill after vacuuming;
② Find the reason, and then overhaul;
③ Blow it clean with compressed air;
④ Do a good job of ventilation and reduce the ambient temperature. Or purchase a new refrigeration dryer;
⑤ Repair or replace the pressure switch;
⑥ Replace the fan motor;
⑦ Swap any two of the three-phase lines;
⑧ Repair or replace the regulating valve;


(4) Refrigerated dryer is noisy when running

Below are the possible reasons:

① Abnormal noise caused by fan motor failure. Such as blade bending. Or the bearing has damage;
② The refrigerant compressor is damaged, so causes abnormal noise;
③ Abnormal noise of the compressor in the refrigerant dryer due to lack of refrigerant;
④ The compressor is short of oil;
⑤ Refrigerant liquid return;


How to solve above dryer problems:

① Replace or repair the refrigeration dryer fan;
② Replace the refrigerant compressor, or repair it;
③ Add refrigerant;
④ Check the oil level. Then add lubricating oil;
⑤ Check the expansion valve of refrigerant dryer. Adjust or replace;


(5) Frost in the liquid pipe or air return pipe

The possible reasons are below:

① High-pressure side maintenance valve failure;
② The drying filter of refrigerated dryer is blocking;
③ The expansion valve or hot gas bypass valve is out of control;


How to solve the problems:

① Open the valve to remove the blockage;
② Replace the filter drier;
③ Adjust the hot gas bypass valve. Raise the return air pressure to within the normal range;


(6) Refrigerated dryer is running. But the air outlet temperature is high

The possible reasons are as follows:

① Refrigerant is too small, or it leaks;
② The evaporator pressure control setting is not high;
③ There is blockage in the drying filter;
④ Cooling condenser of refrigeration dryer is dirty and blocking;
⑤ The refrigerant compressor efficiency is not high;
⑥ The inlet air volume or temperature is too high;
⑦ Ambient temperature is too high;


How to solve above problems:

① Check for leaks, then repair. Finally, refill the refrigerant;
② The evaporator pressure control setting is not high;
③ Replace the filter drier;
④ Clean the refrigerant dryer condenser;
⑤ Repair or replace the compressor;
⑥ Reduce the intake air volume or reduce the intake air temperature;
⑦ Try to lower the ambient temperature, or repurchase the refrigerated dryer;


(7) Refrigeration dryer is working. But the pressure drop is too high

The reasons are as follows:

① Inlet pressure of the drying system is low;
② The precooler and evaporator have blockage. Or refrigerant dryer evaporator is blocking;
③ The compressed air pipeline design is incorrect;
④ There is too much water in the refrigerated dryer;
⑤ The compressed air filters are blocking;


The solutions are below:

① Increase the intake pressure of compressor dryer system;
② Clean with detergent. Or adjust the hot gas bypass valve;
③ Increase the size of the pipeline, or correct the pipelines;
④ Check the drainage. Repair or replace as necessary;
⑤ Clean or replace the filter element;


(8) The low pressure of refrigerant is too low. So it cause the pressure switch to trip

Cause analysis:

① The compressed air does not flow for a long time;
② The load of refrigeration dryer is too light;
③ The hot gas bypass valve is not opened or faulty;
④ Insufficient or leaking refrigerant;


Approaches are as follows;

① Improve air consumption;
② Increase the compressed air flow and heat load;
③ Adjust the hot gas bypass valve. Replace if damaged;
④ Add refrigerant or check for leakage. Fill the refrigerant after leak repair;


(9) The refrigerated dryer is functioning normally. But the cooling effect is not good

This is mainly due to changes in operating conditions. Thus, the working state of the refrigeration system also changes. It causes refrigeration valve failure. At this time, it need manual adjustment. When adjusting, the amplitude should be small. Rotate the valve stem 1/4~1/2 turn each time. Run for about 10 to 20 minutes. Then observe the cooling effect of refrigerant dryer. If there is no significant change, adjust again.

In addition, we often repair the refrigeration dryer. Take care to protect the refrigeration system. To avoid capillary breakage. Otherwise, it will result in refrigerant leakage.


8. Compressed air refrigerant dryer maintenance (1) Observe and record the gauge value of refrigeration dryer 4 times a day

① The pressure difference between the inlet and outlet does not exceed 0.035Mpa;
② Evaporation pressure gauge: 0.4Mpa-0.5Mpa;
③ High pressure gauge: 1.2Mpa-1.6Mpa.


(2) For refrigerated dryer, we should always observe the drainage system

① Cleaning frequency of the float drainer of refrigerant dryer: once a week or so;
② The sewage pipe discharges sewage once a week.


Cleaning method of electronic drainer of refrigeration dryer:

Ⅰ.Close the ball valve in front of the automatic drainer;
Ⅱ. Firstly, loosen the upper fixing nut. Then take out the timing coil. The coil must not come into contact with water during cleaning. Otherwise the coil will burn out;
Ⅲ. Unplug the hose. Afterwards, unscrew the drain valve body. Empty the compressed air in the drain;
Ⅳ. Remove the valve core and wipe it clean;
Ⅴ. Screw the valve body back into place. Then open the front ball valve slightly. Use compressed air to empty the impurities, water and oil in the drainage system. Finally clean the valve body;
Ⅵ. Install the valve core and timing coil back in place. Then install the hose. Open the front ball valve.


(3) Regularly check the refrigeration system of refrigerated dryer

① Touch the compressor by hand at least once a day. Normally it’s cold and frosty;

② For the filter drier, touch the temperature difference between the two sides by hand every week. The temperature difference should not be large. If the inlet is hot and the outlet is cold, we need to replace it;

③ If compressor has abnormal sound and heat, you should contact the after-sales service asap.


(4) Regularly clean the refrigerant dryer

① Always wipe off the oil and dust on the surface of refrigeration dryer. Keep the refrigerant dryer clean and dry. Never use a wet towel to scrub the electrical box and circuit system.

② If it’s water-cooled refrigerant dryer, should clean the water filter regularly. Because impurities will accumulate on the filter element. Thereby it will the water flow.

③ If it’s air-cooled refrigerated dryer, need to remove the dust on the condenser surface frequently. So as not to affect the heat exchange effect of the condenser.
